1940's  Danny Hutton has a birthday. After a failing as solo, he starts Three Dog Night in '68 with three lead singers. Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells front the group. 1942
1950's  Dream on. Founder of the Joe Perry Project, but far better known as Aerosmith’s lead guitarist, Joe Perry, enters the world. He's a native of Lawrence, MA. 1950

Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" peaks in the Top 10. 1955

Johnny Fingers, keyboardist with the Boomtown Rats, is born with the moniker John Moylett. 1956
1960's  Cracker frontman Dave Lowry greets the world. The guitarist is also a founding member of Camper Van Beethoven. 1960

Rod Stewart`s "Good Morning Little School Girl" is his first single. 1964

Buckcherry guitarist Stevie D., Fastball guitarist/vocalist Miles Zuniga and Bush drummer Robin Goodridge share a birthday. 1966

The Beatles` "Revolver" tops the album chart. Also, The Monkees release their first major single "The Last Train To Clarksville." 1966

1970's  Iggy Pop And The Stooges start work on “Raw Rower.” Produced by band member James Williamson, the album is mixed by Pop and David Bowie. 1972

The BBC bans the Rolling Stone's "Star, Star" because the f-word is used repeatedly. 1973

The New York Dolls disband. Later original members attempt to pick up the mantel with even less commercial success than before. 1974

“Alive!” by KISS is out. The double-set is the band’s first platinum album. 1975

It's the Patti Smith Group's last gig. The concert is in Florence, Italy. Smith announces her retirement to spend more time with her kids and ailing husband, former MC5 guitarist, Fred "Sonic" Smith. It`ll be nearly a decade before she hits the stage again. 1979
1980's  Mikey Way, bassist for My Chemical Romance, has a birthday. He’s the younger brother of the band's frontman Gerard Way. 1980

The Clash (namely Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon) announce that Mick Jones has been kicked out of the group. The Clash never recovers – nor does Jones who goes on to start the so-so Big Audio Dynamite. 1983

A good day for Rock singles. Guns N' Roses hold the #1 spot with "Sweet Child O` Mine," a song inspired by Erin Everley, briefly Axl Rose’s wife and daughter of Don Everley (Everley Brothers). The #2 position has Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" while Van Halen's "When It`s Love" is #5. Also, AC/DC's "Flick Of The Switch" hits the charts. Meanwhile, Eric Clapton goes on the road yet again. This time around though, he has Dire Straits' frontman/guitarist Mark Knopfler with him. A lot of licks get traded. 1988
1990's  Oasis' debut album “Definitely Maybe” is #1 in the U.K. 1994
2000's   
Bruce Springsteen presents the 2004 John Steinbeck Award, which honors outspoken artists, to Sean Penn in San Francisco. Springsteen received the award himself in 1996. 2004

Velvet Revolver's Scott Weiland and Duff McKagan and Fuel's Brett Scallions buy into the New York nightspot named Snitch. The club is designed for die-hard urban Rock & Roll fans. 2004

When there's a catastrophe it’s all guitars on deck. Green Day, U2, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Audioslave, 3 Doors Down, Staind, Kid Rock, Mötley Crüe, Dave Matthews Band and Nine Inch Nails (fronted by former New Orleans resident Trent Reznor) perform at ReAct Now: Music & Relief, for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The massively destructive hurricane rolled through New Orleans. The program airs live on MTV, MTV2, VH1, VH1 Classic and CMT. Viewers call-in donations to the American Red Cross and other relief organizations. "To see a place you have spent a good portion of your life in destroyed is overwhelming," writes Reznor. His performance of "Hurt" and Red Hot Chili Peppers' acoustic rendition of "Under the Bridge" are among the show's highlights. 2005

The documentary film Kurt Cobain: About A Son premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. Focusing on the Nirvana frontman’s childhood, the soundtrack includes songs by David Bowie, Cheap Trick and the Breeders. 2006

An animated version of Metallica appears on The Simpsons, as the comedy kicks off its 18th season. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo recorded their lines the previous year. 2006

Linkin Park assist Friends & Helpers, a New Orleans charity, in handing out school supplies to needy students. Band members spend three days distributing goods to schools that were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. 2006

It’s the Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp in Columbus, OH. Participants perform as the opening act for the Def Leppard/Journey show that evening. The camp "counselors" include Bad Company's Simon Kirke and ex-Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle. 2006

A grand piano signed by Eagles singer-guitarist Glenn Frey and Sting (among others) is auctioned off in Richmond, Canada. Proceeds benefit the David Foster Foundation, which helps fund organ transplants for children. 2006

There’s a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert at first Wild River Music, Comedy & Film Festival in St. Paul, MN. The show features Hendrix bassist Billy Cox, Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid and singer Corey Glover. 2006

Even more Hendrix. Author Steven Roby teaches a course entitled Jimi Hendrix, His Life and His Music at California's College of Marin. It’s a seven-week non-credit course. Damn! Roby is the guy who wrote the ’02 book, Black Gold, The Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix. 2007

The debut single, "Empty Walls," from System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian's debut album, "Elect The Dead," goes to radio. 2007

Frontman Steven Tyler's herniated eye forces the cancellation of an Aerosmith show outside of Chicago. It's hell to get old. 2007

Peter Gabriel is awarded the ‘08 Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience Award in recognition of his extensive human-rights campaigning. Gabriel is presented the honor by U2 guitarist The Edge (U2 received the award in ’05) at a London gala. 2008

"The Day That Never Comes," the first single off Metallica’s "Death Magnetic," tops Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. 2008

Nine Inch Nails play what they say is their last show as a band at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. "This is it," lead singer Trent Reznor tells the audience. "We're not going to tour anymore as Nine Inch Nails, but we're all still going to be making music." 2009

A special tribute to Ozzy Osbourne launches the second annual Sunset Strip Music Festival in West Hollywood, CA. The singer is honored for his influence on the Strip's music scene. KoRn performs during the three-day event. "We intend on making it something fans remember for a long time," says KoRn frontman Jonathan Davis prior to the band’s performance. 2009
