The Winery Dogs
Mike Portnoy first earned the public's attention as a co-founder and drummer of the Prog Rock group Dream Theater. Always one to have a side project going, Portnoy's life got a little crazy in '10.
After Avenged Sevenfold's Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan died of a heart condition, brought on by the over consumption of prescription drugs, Portnoy played on the band's fifth album "Nightmare."
"We asked Jimmy's all-time favorite drummer to record on behalf of him," read a band statement. "Mike said it would be an honor and without question that's what Jim would have wanted."
"I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy's memory," added Portnoy.
Portnoy was eventually selected as The Rev's permanent' replacement - which meant leaving Dream Theater.
"After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater," stated Portnoy.
So it was a surprise three months later when Portnoy announced that he was no longer in Avenged Sevenfold. "I had a great time with them throughout 2010, but it was their choice to end the relationship."
"We always knew we'd need to find another solution for 2011 and beyond," Avenged Sevenfold explained in a statement. "And it's time for us to take that next step."
Portnoy kept busy launching Adrenaline Mob and Flying Colors. Both bands released their full-length debut albums in '12. That same year saw the appearance of the power-trio, The Winery Dogs with Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) and drummer Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big, Poison).
The Winery Dogs' self-titled debut was released in '13 and cracked the Top 30 on the album chart. Their second set "Hot Streak" arrived two years later.
"Everything on this album was more of a collaboration than on the first album," enthused Portnoy. "There's just a natural chemistry. The three of us really mesh very, very well, both musically and personally."
