My Darkest Days
Sometimes the music business is more like musical chairs.
Case in point: In early '13 My Darkest Days announced that guitarist Sal Coz Costa was leaving to "pursue his own musical journey and collaborations."
The announcement put the group on hiatus. So frontman Matt Walst was available to fill in for Adam Gontier who had left Three Days Grace for medical reasons just as the group was preparing for a co-headlining North American tour with Shinedown.
Getting Matt onboard wasn't exactly a cold call. Matt's older brother, Brad, is the bassist for Three Days Grace.
That wasn't the first time the sibling connection benefited Matt.
When Three Days Grace was opening for Nickelback, Brad passed along a demo tape of Matt's band, My Darkest Days, to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger. Very impressed, Kroeger signed the group to his label, 604 Records.
My Darkest Days, who hailed from Norwood, Ontario, formed in '05, and released their self-titled debut five year's later. The set was primarily known for the band's first major-label single, "Porn Star Dancing," which went gold in Canada. The song's video featured Kroeger and Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde. Also from the album, "The World Belongs To Me" was on the Saw 3D soundtrack.
Their second album, "Sick And Twisted Affair," preceded the group's opening slot on Nickelback's tour. Supporting Nickelback must be a Walst Brothers' tradition. Bush and Seether were also on the trek.
Work had begun on My Darkest Days third album when Costa departed - and Walst hooked up with Three Days Grace. Even so, the group said they were committed to finishing the album.
