Going back as far as ABBA (the '70s), it seems the only way to get noticed in Scandinavia is to win a music competition. That's what Nesna, Norway native Ida Maria (Ida Maria Borli Sivertsen) did winning two national "unknown artist" competitions in '06 and '07.
By '08 she was no longer an unknown artist in Norway and was making U.K. inroads appearing on Later… With Jools Holland.
Ida Maria's debut album "Fortress Round My Heart" was released in '08 and peaked at #39 on the U.K. chart. Her sophomore set, "KATLA" landed two years later. Both were European releases.
A U.S. tour helped raise Ida Maria's profile but she got more traction when her ballad "Keep Me Warm" was featured on the ABC drama Grey's Anatomy and in Nivea commercials. Later, the Punkish "Oh My God" was in the trailer for the film It's Kind Of A Funny Story and "Bad Karma" was heard in Scream 4.
While "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" was also used in TV shows, the song, with the irresistible title, peaked at #13 on the U.K. pop chart and #30 on the Billboard (U.S.) Modern Rock Tracks - her best showing to date.
The U.S. release of "KATLA" came in '11.
