Hannah Hooper was about to leave for Crete to participate in an artist residence program, when she heard Christain Zucconi's music and invited him along. Of course he goes. Meanwhile, drummer Ryan Rabin, the son of former Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin, was friends with another L.A. resident, guitarist/surfer Andrew Wessen, and they were on Crete. And finally, bassist Sean Gadd, who hailed from London, had also joined the Crete commune.
But despite the proximity, the group didn't form until a year later when Hopper, Zucconi and Gadd traveled to L.A. to hook up with Rabin.
Grouplove's debut EP, produced by Rabin, was originally self-released and later reissued by Canvasback/Atlantic. Debut album, "Never Trust A Happy Song," also produced by Rabin, dropped in '11.
From the album, "Colours" peaked at #12 on Modern Rock charts. It was also featured in Madden NFL 12 and MLB 2K12. "Tongue Tied" used in iPod Touch and Coca-Cola commercials, topped the Modern Rock radio chart and was RIAA certified platinum selling over 1,000,000 singles.
Third single "Itchin' On A Photograph" was featured on the NASCAR The Game: Inside Line soundtrack.
September '13, saw the arrival of Grouplove's sophomore set, "Spreading Rumours."
"Big Mess" dropped three years later. It featured the Garage Rock track "Traumatized," which documented parental emotions - when "time just seems to slip away."
The Big Mess World Tour followed with one dollar from every ticket sale donated to Charity: Water, which funded clean-water projects around the world.
