Go-Gos

Not since the Beach Boys, nearly two decades earlier, had a band been more consistently happy and upbeat. It shouldn't be surprising since lead singer Belinda Carlisle was a high school cheerleader - in Hollywood, no less. Carlisle, Jane Wieldin (guitar), Charlotte Caffey (guitar), Margo Olaverra (bass) and Gina Shock (drums) hit the L.A. club circuit. By '80 they'd gone to England and released "We Got The Beat" as a one-off for Stiff Records. While in the U.K. Olaverra took ill and was replaced by Kathy Valentine. The change proved long-term.

Signed to I.R.S. Records, the Go-Go's hit with "Our Lips Are Sealed." Re-recording "We Got The Beat," they scored again. Their debut CD "Beauty And The Beat," with both songs went platinum (twice).

The "Vacation" and "Talk Show" CDs were next. The latter had their best song "Head Over Heels," a hard charging Rocker with a great piano part.

The Go-Go's called it quits in '85. But the story doesn't end. A few years later, the Go-Go's re-grouped, recorded and toured. At one point, former-Bangle Vicki Peterson filled in for the pregnant Caffey.

1994 Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's
2001 God Bless The Go-Go's

Starting as a L.A. Punk group, the Go-Go's mainstreamed their sound by the time they got around to their excellent debut "Beauty and the Beat." "Greatest Hits" culls the hits ("We Got The Beat," "Head Over Heels," "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "Vacation" to name a few). Both lead singer Belinda Carlisle and guitarist Jane Wieldin produced solo albums. Carlisle' s "Heaven On Earth" is her best effort.
