Richard Swift, a producer (The Shins, The Mynabirds and Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab), was also a member of The Shins (keyboards, piano, organ) and spent part of '14 as the Black Keys' touring bassist and backing vocalist. In other words, the guy has a pretty accomplished resume.
So Swift was in New York back in '11 to take in a Mynabirds show when two guys approached with their EP. Usually, these EPs/demos get tossed but not this one. Swift liked what he heard and Foxygen (lead singer Sam France and guitarist Jonathan Rado) landed on Jagjaguwar Records where they released their debut full-length studio album, "Take The Kids Off Broadway."
The France/Rado duo was augmented by bassist Justin Nijssen and drummer Shaun Fleming.
The group's sophomore set, "We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic," containing the single "Shuggie," was recorded at Swift's National Freedom studio. The album, which peaked at #76 on the Billboard album chart, and a SXSW appearance raised the band's profile. Also, France got a well-deserved reputation for crazed performances, including a show in Minneapolis where he fell off the stage and broke his leg.
With the single, "How Can You Really, Foxygen's third album, "...And Star Power," dropped in '14.
