Trivia Question: Who was the first Punk band to release a single in the UK? Likely, the answer depends on the definition of Punk. But the general consensus is The Damned and their '76 release "New Rose."
A pair of albums, "Damned, Damned, Damned" and "Music For Pleasure" rolled out in '77. When the latter received poor reviews The Damned broke up but quickly reformed without guitarist Brian James. He was replaced by Lu Edmunds.
Their next album, "Machine Gun Etiquette," received the desired critical praise.
Having morphed into a Goth Rock group, The Damned released "The Black Album," an '80 double set with three studio sides and live tracks on the fourth, and '82's "Strawberries."
Captain Sensible who had switched from bass to guitar in '78, took leave in '84.
"Phantasmagoria" arrived in '85 with "Anything" showing up a year later. Also in 86, the non-album single "Eloise", a cover of a '68 hit by pop singer Barry Ryan, was a UK #3, the group's highest chart placing. While The Damned's version was tougher, they didn't venture too far from the original.
James and Sensible returned in '88 to play The Damned's final live show of the decade - originally billed as their final show ever. The concert, recorded at The Town & Country Club in London on 6/13/88 was released the next year as "Final Damnation."
The Damned reformed for a '91 tour. Drummer Rat Scabies' last shot with the group was the '95 set "Not Of This Earth." That was followed by '01's "Grave Disorder" and '08's "So, Who's Paranoid?" which featured the group's most stable line-up: vocalist Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, keyboardist Monty Oxymoron, bassist Stu West and drummer Pinch.
Don't You Wish That We Were Dead, a documentary about The Damned, premiered at the '15 SXSW Festival in Austin. The film featured original members Vanian, Captain Sensible, Scabies and James along with an appearance by Motorhead's Lemmy.
Months later, former bassist Bryn Merrick died at the age of 56 after a battle with cancer. He was in The Damned from '84 to '89.
