Ben Kweller was one of those child prodigies. At the ripe old age of nine he entered a songwriting contest sponsored by Billboard magazine. The San Francisco born - Emory/Greenville, TX raised Kweller earned an honorable mention.
In '93, Kweller founded Radish. Four years and five bass players later, he moved on to a solo career. The "Freak Out, It's Ben Kweller" EP caught the attention of The Lemonheads' Evan Dando who invited Kweller to tour with him. Jeff Tweedy and Juliana Hatfield also provided spots for Kweller on their tours.
Signed with ATO Records, Kweller released "EP Phone Home," a five track set. That '01 effort was followed by the full-length "Sha Sha." The single "Wasted & Ready" reached #29 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Kweller toured Australia in '03 with Ben Folds and Ben Lee as The Bens. An eponymous four-song EP resulted.
Produced by Ethan Johns, "On My Way," Kweller's second LP, was recorded 'live' - in that there were limited overdubs and no use of headphones. Then there was a U.S. co-headlining tour with Death Cab for Cutie.
Though he had a backing band for touring, Kweller played all the instruments for his third album, aptly titled "Ben Kweller." Three years later, in '09, Kweller incorporated Country stylings for "Changing Horses." Kitt Kitterman played pedal steel guitar and dobro. The entire album was streamed exclusively on Last.fm.
Having left ATO, Kweller's debut album for his own label, The Noise Company, was the '12 release "Go Fly A Kite." His fourth full-length album was recorded in Austin.
